About this item: Another short flute is the nguru which has a semi enclosed bore and softer sound. This nguru has a carved Kokako, a bird, which received several gifts from Maui among which was the knowledge of how to 'sing like Raukatauri’ the goddess who became a casemoth. Maui told Kokako to eat the casemoth a diet it still can be seen to relish today and the resulting sound of this songbird’s pure notes and haunting calls has amplified the magical voice of Raukatauri.

About Taonga Puoro: In Maori Music traditions musical instruments are members of the families of the Gods. Tunes are named Rangi after the Sky Father to whom they ascend after being sounded and Rhythms  come from the heartbeats of Papa, the Earth Mother. Their children, Hine pu te Hue, Tane, and Tawhiri Matea, their Great uncle Tangaroa and a grandchild, Raukatauri, Goddess of flute music, are most of the ancestors of a wide range of musical instruments.
