In Maori myth the extinction of HAKUWAI The Giant Eagle was the result of a competition with Kahu, the Hawk, to see who could fly the highest. Thus he disappeared from sight, and in this carving is stylised silhouetted against the moon as last seen.
From this story and others his name has become a word for dependability and strength of resolve, and makes him a very special Kaitiaki.
