This carving is from a series of similar designs called Moana, for its derivation from the waves of the oceans. Like the ever changing seas, each is different but the elements remain constant. The cut out sections which represent the Spiritual element, or Ira Atua, are carefully shaped to create pleasing spaces. The stone is the balancing Physical element or Ira Tangata.
