Hei matau are stylised fish hooks from a tradition where the sea god Tangaroa gave us the art of carving. Special decorative hooks were therefore lowered with the functional ones to impress Tangaroa who would reward excellence with a good catch of his fish children. Thus they remain relevant as symbols of good luck, the value of excellence, and the importance of working with the unseen spirit world.
