Hei matau are stylised fish hooks from a tradition where the sea god Tangaroa gave us the art of carving. Special decorative hooks were therefore lowered with the functional ones to impress Tangaroa who would reward excellence with a good catch of his fish children. Thus they remain relevant as symbols of good luck, the value of excellence, and the importance of working with the unseen spirit world.
Matau Aka invoke the attributes of special vines which were sometimes trained in growth to a required shape which gave them added strength when used as hook shafts. The twisting of the vine here creates two koru shapes to add their power.
