The most common shape in Maori art is the koru. This is a stylisation of an uncurling new fern frond and portrays any of the many concepts suggested by its vigorous growth, such as treasured memories, people, places, good fortune etc. its use in design therefore also conveys any appropriate concept designated to it. In carving the koru is often the cut out or spirit shape as in this Ira design.
