Wearable art in Jade and Bone is an esteemed tradition of Aotearoa, New Zealand and the skilled work of ancient artists becomes a legacy that is held in awe around the world. The art of the carver of small objects in stone and bone within the Maori tradition is to encapsulate a combination of many things. While the carving may tell a story, describe places or events, depict a guardian, or represent something esteemed, it must also embody an ethos and be a decoration giving its owner pride.

To achieve these aims the artist must be a skilled craftsperson, a medium, and a student of history, nature, myth, cosmogony and traditional lore. However, when such artists work fluently in the Maori tradition the powerful art forms which result can evoke responses which impact on both their owners and viewers. It is no wonder that some carvings become famed icons, revered for generations and prized beyond measure. Their value is often further enhanced by the circumstances of their creation and the inherent prestige of the material used, which, like the Pounamu (Jade), has latent power in its inheritance.
