These are a selection of Kaitiaki or Guardian Figures all based on a circle with a circle cut out from it and with two opposing manaia or profile spirit faces at the top. These manaia here convey an acknowledgement of a special attribute given by the spirit world. For example, the wings on this butterfly are carved as manaia faces to show their special gift of flight. The carvings are designed as pendants but with easily removed cords so that they can be placed on a stone or other object and double as a fascinating conversation piece as well as being a guardian.
In Maori myth the extinction of HAKUWAI The Giant Eagle was the result of a competition with Kahu, the Hawk, to see who could fly the highest.
