Introduction PDF Print
These pages show examples of Clem and Brian's work, and introduces you to their philosophy of carving.

Clem Mellish is one of New Zealand's leading jade carvers. Jade is also known in New Zealand as Pounamu, or Greenstone. Its deep and varied colour makes it a wonderful choice for jewellery.

Brian Flintoff is also a highly respected New Zealand carver, whose medium of choice is bone. Most of his works are commissioned in beefbone, which has the advantages of being a renewable and sustainable resource, and of producing a lustrous sheen in the final piece. He also occasionally works in whalebone, antler, and other mediums, for specific commissions.

Nga ToaClem and Brian's shared interest in carving, Māori art, and nature have led to them forming a close friendship. Each emphasises in their carvings more than just a three dimensional artform. Their carvings reflect both the physical nature of the piece, and the spiritual dimension of the forms the carvings represent. It is important to them that the carving be visually appealing, but also that it tells a story, and that the shape of the cut-out, through which the wearer or environment is seen, adds to the story and appeal of the piece.

If you would like to purchase some of their work, you can contact them to discuss your interest. Not all of the pieces shown will still be available for purchase, but they give you an introduction to their carving style. You may wish to commission a special carving to commemorate a special person or occasion in your life, or to request a carving similar to one displayed on these pages.
